Jehovah’s Witnesses: ‘No objection’ to research into sexual abuse
The denomination of Jehovah’s Witnesses has ‘no objection’ to the reporting of sexual abuse within the religious community.
This is what a spokesman said in response to the news that the Public Prosecutor is investigating nine cases of sexual violence within the community.
‘See outcome with interest’
‘Obviously, we have no objections to the fact that declarations have been submitted and that those involved must soon be held accountable to the courts. We are therefore looking forward to the findings of the Public Prosecution Service with interest. ‘
Because details of the declarations are not known to the denomination, the spokesman further refers to ‘The Biblical position of Jehovah’s Witnesses on the protection of children’. This states, among other things, that the denomination never protects child sex offenders and that victims and their parents have every right to make a report.
Stadjer Frank Huiting is one of the people who filed a report. In his youth, Huiting was abused for years by a member of this church. Together with a number of fellow sufferers, he founded Stichting Reclaimed Voices last year to denounce sexual abuse at the Jehovah’s.
Hundreds of cases
According to the foundation, within the Jehovah’s Witnesses, hundreds of cases of sexual abuse occur in our country alone. The foundation therefore argues for a study such as the Deetman committee that also did with the Roman Catholic Church.
– Stadjer makes a declaration against Jehovah’s Witnesses because of sexual abuse
– OM investigates sexual abuse with Jehovah’s Witnesses
– ‘Jehovah’s Witnesses should no longer be silent about sexual abuse’
